Central and East Africa

Search’s work in Central and East Africa began in 1995 with the launch of Studio Ijambo in Burundi, which was founded in direct response to the role that the media played in the genocide in neighboring Rwanda. We now work in Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan and Tanzania. With more than 90% local hires, our field teams in the region lead our work with their deep expertise and connections to local communities. Search engages through a range of different approaches, including research, strategy development, capacity building and direct implementation. Our focus in the region include strengthening independent media and open dialogue, promoting women’s leadership and socio-economic participation, fostering cohesion among youth and security forces, and preventing violence in the pre and post election periods.
